Introducing Ladybug Farm

LbF, Spring 2010

We are starting a farm and we're calling it Ladybug Farm!

Evelyn and I have fifteen years gardening experience and in that time we went from a small 3 x 5 bed to turning our entire front yard in Durham into a food producing wonderland... complete with two laying chickens, a green house, and a compost station.  We have always used the healthiest growing methods and will continue to do so, meaning no chemical fertilizers or pesticides.  So you can trust that the veggies you receive from LbF will satisfy you in both taste and health.

Last year we moved to two acres in Hurdle Mills, just over Person County line at the end of Guess Road.  Since then, I have enlarged our garden space to 1,800 square feet and we are hoping to produce the largest harvest of spring, summer, and fall veggies in our lives (that is, if all goes according to plan and when it comes to producing food you can only start with a plan.)

Anyway, we would like to begin our new farm by asking our friends for some help getting this thing started in the form of a CSA.  Community Supported Agriculture is a program in which farmers partner with their community to grow their farm while providing them with a regular supply of produce throughout the growing season. We'd like to charge $60 per month to start out and limit the number of shares to 3 or 4 for this year (CSA's run by established farms can run $500 - $700 for a 5-month season).  The monthly commitment provides you with both the rich bounty of our little farm as well as the flexibility to opt out during the season on a month-to-month basis.

There will be weekly pickups on Wednesday afternoons in downtown Durham or you can drive up and visit the farm.

Here's what we plan to grow:

SPRING
lettuces
swiss chard
spinach
beets
arugula
red potatoes
sugar snap peas
bok choi
carrots

SUMMER
slicing tomatoes
Celebrity sauce tomatoes
grape and sun gold tomatoes
cucumbers
green beans
bell peppers
squashes (while it lasts)
zucchini (while it lasts)
eggplant
okra (maybe)

FALL
lettuces
swiss chard
spinach
beets
arugula
red potatoes
sugar snap peas
bok choi
carrots

We will blog about all things farm-related at www.ladybugfarmnc.blogspot.com and you can contact us at ladybugfarmnc@gmail.com with any questions you have.
